Against all the odds, but with a very talented team of dancers and musicians, playwright, designer and director as well as generous private sponsors, the Weaver Dance Company gave three performances of The Loves of Mars and Venus; or, Mr. Weaver’s Dramatick Entertainment. We marked the actual 300th anniversary of this first modern ballet on 2nd March 2017 with a performance in the Fitzwilliam College Auditorium in Cambridge. All three performances – in Hastings, in Cambridge and at the Courtauld Gallery in London – drew good and hugely appreciative audiences. Some of their reactions can be seen elsewhere on this website.
Now, we are looking forward to our next performance in Richmond, North Yorkshire and the privilege of recreating an 18th-century ballet in a real Georgian playhouse. There will be more blog posts on Weaver, his work and his world as we prepare for 8 June 2017.
